The Republican National Committee has spent more than $ 121,000 on legal fees for former President Donald Trump as he faces a criminal investigation into his financial practices in New York City.

In October, the committee made two payments totaling $ 121,670 to law firm Ronald Fischetti, a criminal defense attorney Trump hired in April this year as part of the office’s multi-year investigation. from the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office on the Trump organization and the affairs of the former president. relationships.

A payment of $ 58,240 was made on October 6 and another payment of $ 63,430 was made on October 13, according to FEC documents seen by Insider.

Although the party’s executive committee approved the payments in recent weeks, requests for legal funds came in over the summer, a person familiar with the matter said. The Washington Post.

In May of this year, Manhattan DA Cyrus Vance Jr. announced he was summoning a grand jury as his office investigated whether the Trump organization violated state tax laws “by holding two sets of books – one for low tax and loan rates, and the other for low tax, ”reported Sonam Sheth and Jacob Shamsian of Insider.

The investigation into Trump and his company’s finances is extensive and has been ongoing for more than two years.

The office of New York Attorney General Letitia James is also investigating the finances of the Trump Organization, as well as the personal finances of the former president, to determine whether the company falsely inflated the value of Trump’s assets to for loan purposes and tax benefits.

Another source familiar with the committee’s discussions about paying Trump’s legal bills told The Post that the RNC approved the decision because James made earlier remarks targeting the former president.

The source added that the organization is not paying legal fees related to the investigation into Trump’s role in the January 6 riot.

Representatives from Trump’s office, Fischetti’s law firm and the RNC did not immediately return Insider’s request for comment.

“As the leader of our party, standing up for President Trump and his accomplishments is essential for the GOP,” the party said in a written statement to the Post. “It is only fitting that the RNC continues to help fight the Democrats’ endless witch-hunt and attacks against it.”

This isn’t the first time the RNC has footed the bill for Trump’s legal fees. In 2017, Trump used campaign funds and RNC funding to pay his legal bills as part of the investigation into alleged Russian interference in the U.S. election.
