Fairfax Criminal Investigations Division officer arrested for impaired driving

FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. — A detective assigned to the Fairfax County Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division was arrested in Stafford County on Friday for driving under the influence, police say.

Stephen Copp, 57, of Woodbridge, was off duty at the time and was driving a county car, police said.

A Stafford deputy saw the blue Ford Fusion ignore a red light and “nearly cause an accident” on Courthouse Road and Hospital Center Boulevard, officials said.

Copp, a 15-year-old veteran, was observed with glassy bloodshot eyes and breath that smelled of alcohol, police said. He was arrested for DUI and traffic light violation just before 12:30 a.m. on September 9.

Authorities confirmed there was damage to the front of the car. Copp was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation by the Office of Internal Affairs.
