Criminal investigation underway at biochemical supplier to Old Saybrook

OLD SAYBROOK, Conn. (WTNH) – A criminal investigation is underway at a biochemical supplier on Center Road West in Old Saybrook.

Old Saybrook police arrived at LabDIRECT LLC at 3 p.m. Wednesday, and nearby businesses were shut down an hour later. The ATF assisted the State Police Bomb Squad in setting off two controlled explosions Thursday morning. The bomb squad and firefighters left soon after, but as of Thursday evening police and hazmat crews are still on the scene.

“I can’t comment much on the situation while it’s ongoing, beyond saying there’s never been a spill or incident, no injuries and no there has never been a danger to public safety,” said Richard Carboni, owner and director of LabDIRECT LLC. “We have always cooperated and are currently cooperating fully with all relevant authorities to try to resolve any issues.”

A worker at a nearby business said he was first told to come to work at noon on Thursday and then go home as they were still closed.

Old Saybrook Police Chief Michael Spera said his agency was leading the criminal investigation and confirmed there was no danger to the public.

Part of Center Road West had been closed due to the investigation, but has since reopened.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
