Criminal investigation underway at a business in Old Saybrook

OLD SAYBROOK, CT (WFSB) – A federal criminal investigation into a biochemical supply business in Old Saybrook has closed a road since Wednesday afternoon.

Connecticut State Police confirmed to Channel 3 that the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) has asked the state police bomb squad to assist its investigators from LabDIRECT LLC.

The ATF left the scene and Old Saybrook Police took over the investigation.

The company owner released a statement late Thursday morning.

“I can’t comment on the situation while it continues, beyond saying that we still have and are currently cooperating fully with all relevant authorities to try to resolve any issues, and that there is no poses no danger to public safety,” said Richard Carboni of LabDIRECT. . “As soon as I’m able to post more information, I’ll let you know.”

According to Old Saybrook Police Chief Michael Spera, Center Road West in the city was closed Thursday morning and has been since 2 p.m. Wednesday.

LabDIRECT describes itself as a biochemical supplier on its website.

State police said there were potential explosive materials that were controlled and supervised by the bomb squad, and there was no threat to the public.

Channel 3 cameras picked up smoke above the trees where LabDIRECT LLC is located.

Loud explosions were heard.

Old Saybrook Police warned local shopkeepers of the audible explosions, but these were planned detonations.

Spera reiterated that there was no threat to the public.

However, hazardous materials trucks were spotted on the property.

Mark Everin was hoping to get to work before noon, but his boss called him just before time, saying the inquiry across the street meant they would be closed on Thursday.

“I think they have it under control, hopefully,” Everin said. “You turn on the news, it’s like everyday something involving police officers.”

Chief Spera stressed the ongoing nature of the investigation, saying revealing anything could jeopardize the ongoing work.
